Description
What this enzyme does
Lipase hydrolyses triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol, which a detergent can then remove easily. It is the answer to cooking oil marks, butter and ghee, lipstick, body oils in collars and cuffs, and light machine grease. It is also the enzyme that stops the faint rancid smell that develops in towels and kitchen cloths washed at low temperature.
Dosing and conditions
Laundry powder and liquid 0.2 to 0.6%. Optimum 30 to 60 degrees at pH 7 to 11. Lipase is a slow worker and shows its full benefit across repeated washes rather than in a single cycle, so evaluate it over a few weeks rather than one test load.
Keeping enzymes alive
Enzymes are proteins and they are fragile. Four things kill them: heat above about 60 degrees, strong oxidisers such as hypochlorite and peroxide, extremes of pH, and heavy metal ions. Add them late and cold, keep bleach out of the same formulation, and include a little EDTA to chelate metals. Stored sealed in a cool dark place they hold activity for around a year; left in a hot store they lose it in weeks.
Why enzymes pay for themselves
Enzymes look expensive per kilo and are cheap per wash, because they are dosed at well under one percent and they replace surfactant you would otherwise have to buy. A formulation with a correctly chosen enzyme typically outperforms one with five percent more surfactant, at lower cost, and it gives you a genuine, defensible claim on the label.
