Description
What it is used for
Hydrochloric acid dissolves limescale, cement residue, rust and urine scale faster and more cheaply than any alternative. Thickened and inhibited, it is the working ingredient in commercial toilet bowl cleaner. Diluted, it is used to clean masonry after construction, to descale boilers and heat exchangers, to regenerate ion exchange resin in water treatment, and to correct pH in swimming pools.
Formulating a toilet cleaner
A typical thickened bowl cleaner runs 8 to 15% HCl with a corrosion inhibitor, a non-ionic thickener that survives low pH, a dye and a fragrance. Add the acid to the water phase, never the reverse. Test the finished product on a ceramic tile and a chrome fitting before you sell it, an uninhibited acid cleaner will pit chrome and etch glaze within a few uses and destroy your reputation faster than any competitor can.

Concentrated HCl fumes visibly and those fumes attack lungs and metal fittings across a whole store room. Decant outdoors or under extraction. Full face protection, chemical gloves and an apron. Never store or transport it beside sodium hypochlorite, mixing the two releases chlorine gas. We supply the SDS and the correct transport labelling with every order.
