Description
Concentrated, so it lasts
This is a strong liquid dye rather than a diluted tint. A typical dose is 0.01 to 0.05% of the batch, which means a 500ml bottle will colour something in the region of a thousand litres of finished product. Buying a concentrate rather than a pre-diluted colour is the single easiest cost saving in a small detergent operation.
How to use it
Always dilute the colourant in a little water first, then add that solution to the batch slowly while stirring, and stop as soon as you reach the shade you want. Neat dye added straight to a drum produces streaks and dark spots that take a long time to disperse. Judge the colour in daylight against a white background, not under a workshop bulb.
Colour stability
Dyes fade. High alkalinity, hypochlorite, peroxide and direct sunlight all attack them, so a product that looks right on the day it is made can look washed out after a month on a sunlit shelf. Test your shade in the actual finished formulation, leave a sample in the sun for two weeks, and set your dose from that result rather than from the first mix. If your product contains bleach, expect to overdose the colour or accept that it will pale.
Packaging note
Concentrated dye stains skin, clothing and porous work surfaces permanently. Gloves and a covered bench are worth the trouble.
