The acid you can use around food
Phosphoric acid at 85% is the workhorse acid of the food and beverage industry. It descales dairy plate heat exchangers and milk lines without attacking stainless steel the way hydrochloric acid does, it acidifies soft drinks, and it is approved for food contact at controlled levels. It is also considerably less unpleasant to work with than HCl because it does not fume.
Rust conversion
Applied to rusted steel, phosphoric acid converts iron oxide into iron phosphate, a stable, inert, paintable grey-black layer. That is what every rust converter and metal etch primer in a hardware shop is doing. A 10 to 25% solution with a wetting agent makes an effective and very cheap workshop rust treatment.
Other uses
Acid toilet cleaner where chrome safety matters, aluminium brightener for truck bodies and rims, water treatment, fertiliser blending, and pH correction in fermentation.
Handling
Corrosive but non-fuming. Gloves, goggles and an apron. It crystallises in a cold store below about 20 degrees, warm the drum gently and it returns to normal with no loss of quality. Food grade certification and SDS supplied with every order.
