The general purpose solvent
Naphtha in the 150 to 180 degree boiling range, sold across East Africa as white spirit or mineral turpentine, is the cheapest effective solvent for anything oil based. It thins alkyd and enamel paint, cleans brushes and rollers, flushes paint lines, dissolves bitumen and tar, and strips grease and protective wax off engineering components and new machinery.
Parts washing
It is the standard fluid in a workshop parts washer. It cuts oil and grease quickly, evaporates without leaving residue, and does not attack most gasket materials, but it will soften some rubbers and plastics, so test before soaking anything valuable.
Safety
Flammable, flash point around 40 degrees. Vapour is heavier than air. Ventilate the working area, no smoking or open flame, and store drums in a cool bunded area away from oxidisers. Repeated skin contact degreases and cracks skin, so use nitrile gloves for anything more than momentary handling.
