What glycerine does
Glycerine is hygroscopic, it pulls water out of the air and holds it. In a hand wash or liquid soap at 2 to 5% it counteracts the drying effect of the surfactants. In hand sanitiser at 1.5% it is the reason alcohol at 70% does not leave hands cracked and painful after a week. In a cream or lotion at 3 to 8% it keeps the product soft and stops it drying out in the jar.
Beyond cosmetics
Glycerine is a pharmaceutical excipient and cough syrup base, a plasticiser in cellophane and paper, a humectant in tobacco and confectionery, a component of e-liquid, a lubricant for food machinery, and the base for the glycerol used in laboratory work.
USP grade, and why not to compromise
We supply the 99.5% USP grade. Crude or technical glycerine can carry methanol, salts and heavy metal residues. Cheap glycerine contaminated with diethylene glycol has caused mass poisonings in cough syrup elsewhere in the world, and it is not a corner worth cutting on anything that touches skin or is swallowed. Certificate of analysis supplied with every order.
Handling
Clear, odourless, very viscous and completely non-hazardous. It flows slowly in a cold store, warm the container gently rather than forcing it. Keep sealed, because it will absorb atmospheric water and dilute itself over time.
