Description
Why detergent makers use it
Liquid detergent is mostly water with organic material dissolved in it, which makes it a good place for bacteria and mould to grow. A batch with no preservative will smell sour and go cloudy within weeks in Kenyan ambient temperatures. Formalin at 0.1 to 0.3% of the batch stops that, works across a very wide pH range, and costs a fraction of any modern alternative, which is why it remains the default in this market.
Other uses
Fumigating poultry houses, hatcheries and incubators; preserving anatomical and biological specimens; tanning and hide preservation; embalming; and as a hardener in resin and adhesive manufacture.
Dosing correctly
Add it late in the batch, once the mix has cooled, and mix thoroughly, an under-dispersed preservative leaves untreated pockets that spoil anyway. Do not overdose in the belief that more is safer; excess formalin gives the finished product a sharp, recognisable smell that customers reject.
Safety, take this one seriously
Formaldehyde is a recognised carcinogen and a strong respiratory irritant. Decant only in genuinely well ventilated space, never in a closed store room. Nitrile gloves, splash goggles and, for drum handling, a vapour respirator. Keep it sealed, cool and out of sunlight. We supply the SDS with every order and we will talk you through safer alternatives such as isothiazolinone blends if your product is going into retail.
