Description
Two jobs, one additive
CMC thickens water-based systems, but its more valuable role in laundry products is anti-redeposition. Once a detergent has lifted soil off fabric, that soil is loose in the wash water and will happily settle back onto the cloth. CMC adsorbs onto cotton fibres and gives the surface a negative charge that repels the suspended dirt. Over dozens of washes, that is the difference between whites staying white and slowly going grey.
Inclusion
Laundry powder 0.5 to 2%. Liquid detergent 0.2 to 1% as a thickener and stabiliser. Also used at higher levels in textile printing paste, ceramic glazes, oil-well drilling mud, paper coating and as a food thickener in the food grade version.
How to disperse it
CMC lumps instantly if you tip it into still water. Either sprinkle it slowly into a vortex under high shear, or pre-blend the powder with a dry ingredient such as soda ash or salt before adding it to water. Allow twenty to thirty minutes of hydration before judging the final viscosity, because it thickens gradually.
