Citric acid does most of what a mineral acid does, at a fraction of the risk. It descales kettles, coffee machines, shower heads and boilers, adjusts pH in cosmetics and detergents, and is safe enough to be a standard food ingredient. For any product that a domestic customer will handle, or that a member of staff will dilute without supervision, it is the sensible choice.
Uses in formulation
Adjusting fabric softener to pH 3 to 4 so the esterquat stays stable. Bringing a shampoo down to skin pH. Chelating metal ions as a phosphate-free alternative to STPP. Combined with sodium bicarbonate it gives the fizz in effervescent toilet and denture tablets.
Descaling
A 5 to 10% solution, warm, will clear limescale from most equipment in twenty to thirty minutes. It works more slowly than hydrochloric acid but it will not pit stainless steel, damage chrome or fume, so it can be used on food equipment and left unattended.
Storage
Free-flowing white crystals. Hygroscopic, keep the bag sealed or it will cake. Food grade certification supplied with every order.
