The problem EDTA solves
Kenyan water carries iron, calcium, magnesium and manganese. Those metal ions waste surfactant, catalyse the breakdown of peroxide and fragrance, cause rust staining on white fabric, and undermine preservatives. EDTA forms a stable soluble complex around them so they can no longer react with anything.
Inclusion
Laundry liquid and powder 0.2 to 1%. Bleach and peroxide formulations 0.1 to 0.5%, where it stops premature decomposition. Cosmetics and shampoo 0.05 to 0.2%, largely to protect the preservative system. Industrial and CIP cleaners 0.5 to 2%.
Why it makes preservatives work better
Most preservatives are far more effective when metal ions are chelated, so adding a small amount of EDTA lets you use less preservative for the same shelf life. In a formulation being reworked to reduce formalin, this is usually the first change to make.
Form and handling
Supplied as a clear alkaline 39% solution. Mildly alkaline, easy to handle with gloves and eye protection, fully water miscible and stable in storage.
