Where a non-ionic beats an anionic
NP9 wets and emulsifies oil far better than an anionic surfactant of the same cost, and it does it without generating the mountain of foam that has to be rinsed away afterwards. That makes it the standard choice for engine and workshop degreasers, floor scrubber-drier detergents, metal cleaning and industrial laundry.
Formulating notes
Typical inclusion is 3 to 10% in a degreaser concentrate. It is stable in alkali, so it works well alongside caustic soda, soda ash and sodium metasilicate in heavy-duty formulations. Combined with butyl glycol it will lift baked-on oil and carbon that a surfactant alone will not touch.
Choosing responsibly
Nonylphenol ethoxylates are restricted in domestic products in several markets on aquatic toxicity grounds. We supply NP9 for industrial and institutional use, and we will gladly quote a fatty alcohol ethoxylate such as AEO-9 as a substitute for anything that goes down a domestic drain.
