Why STPP still dominates
Sodium tripolyphosphate sequesters calcium and magnesium, it locks the hardness ions into a soluble complex instead of precipitating them. That does three useful things at once: surfactant stops being wasted on water hardness, dirt that has been lifted stays suspended instead of redepositing on the fabric, and the wash pH is buffered in the alkaline range where detergents perform. No cheaper builder does all three.
Inclusion rates
Laundry powder 10 to 25% depending on the water hardness you are formulating for. Automatic dishwash powder 20 to 40%. Industrial and institutional cleaners 5 to 15%. In very hard water areas, moving STPP from 10% to 20% will usually do more for perceived cleaning power than doubling the surfactant.
Handling
Free-flowing white powder, mildly alkaline. Blend dry into powders; in liquids, dissolve into warm water before adding the surfactant phase or it will settle. Keep sealed, STPP hydrates and cakes in a humid store.
