Pearls or flakes?
Chemically they are the same material at the same 99% purity. The difference is handling. Pearls are dense, spherical and free-flowing, so they pour cleanly out of a bag, weigh accurately on a bench scale and throw almost no dust. Flakes are lighter, cling to everything and generate an alkaline dust you do not want near your eyes. If you are hand-weighing into an open drum several times a day, pearls are worth the small premium.
What it is used for
Neutralising LABSA into detergent, saponifying oils into bar and liquid soap, raising pH in industrial cleaners, drain and oven cleaner formulations, and pH correction in water treatment.
Dissolving safely
Always add caustic to water, never water to caustic. The dissolution is strongly exothermic and a 20% solution will reach uncomfortable temperatures quickly. Use a plastic or stainless vessel, never aluminium, which caustic attacks vigorously and which will generate hydrogen gas. Nitrile gloves, splash goggles and a long sleeve are the minimum.
Storage
Caustic soda pulls moisture straight out of the air and will turn a partly used bag into a solid cake within days. Reseal it, or decant into a screw-top drum. Keep it well away from acids and hypochlorite.
