Made to dissolve
Light soda ash has a much finer particle and lower bulk density than the dense grade, so it goes into solution far faster. If you are making a liquid detergent, a bleach blend or dosing a water treatment tank, that speed is worth more than the handling advantages of dense grade.
Uses
Liquid laundry and dishwashing formulations, pH correction in swimming pools and boreholes, neutralising sulphonic acid where caustic soda is considered too aggressive, degreasers, and general water softening.
Neutralising LABSA with soda ash
Soda ash neutralises sulphonic acid more gently than caustic soda, giving you a wider margin for error on pH. The reaction releases carbon dioxide, so it foams up substantially, use a vessel with at least twice the headroom you think you need and add the ash in stages.
Handling
Mildly alkaline and much safer to handle than caustic soda, but the fine dust still irritates eyes and airways. A dust mask is sensible when emptying bags. Keep sealed and dry to prevent caking.
