Description
Why LABSA is the backbone of Kenyan detergent
Linear alkylbenzene sulphonic acid, universally called Ufacid or simply sulphonic acid in the Nairobi trade, is the lowest-cost route to a working detergent. It is a dark brown, viscous acid that has to be neutralised before it cleans anything, usually with caustic soda solution, soda ash or triethanolamine, after which it becomes an extremely effective anionic surfactant.
Neutralisation, in practice
Roughly 1kg of LABSA 90 needs about 125g of caustic soda dissolved in water, added slowly with constant stirring while you watch the temperature. The reaction gives off real heat. Work to a finished pH of 7 to 8 for a hand-contact product; below 6.5 the product will bite the skin and corrode packaging, above 9 it starts to feel soapy and can irritate. Keep a pH meter or at minimum pH strips within reach of the mixing drum.
Where the 90 grade fits
LABSA 90 is the everyday grade for laundry powder, laundry liquid, dishwashing paste, floor cleaner and industrial degreaser. Where colour matters, a pale, clear dishwashing liquid, for instance, the 96% grade is worth the premium because it carries less unsulphonated oil and darkens the batch less.
Safety
This is a strong acid. Nitrile gloves, splash goggles and an apron are not optional, and it must never be stored next to hypochlorite. We supply an SDS and transport documentation with every drum.
