The formalin alternative
If a buyer, a retailer or an export market has asked you to remove formaldehyde from your product, sodium benzoate is usually the first place to look. It is a food grade preservative with a long regulatory history, effective against yeasts and moulds, and it costs a fraction of a modern isothiazolinone system.
The pH condition
Benzoate only works in acid conditions, it must be below pH 5 to be useful, and it is at its best below pH 4.5. That rules it out for alkaline detergents but makes it ideal for fabric softener, acidic cleaners, shampoo adjusted to skin pH, cosmetics and drinks. Typical dose is 0.1 to 0.5%.
Uses
Soft drinks, juices and syrups, fruit preserves, shampoo and conditioner, fabric softener, acidic bathroom cleaners, and as a corrosion inhibitor in cooling systems and antifreeze.
Practical notes
Dissolves readily in water and should be added to the water phase early. Keep the container sealed and dry. Certificate of analysis and food grade declaration supplied on request.
