Stabilised chlorine, explained
Trichloroisocyanuric acid releases hypochlorous acid slowly as it dissolves, and the cyanurate left behind acts as a sunscreen for the free chlorine already in the water. In an outdoor pool on the equator that is a serious advantage, unstabilised chlorine can be almost entirely destroyed by a single bright afternoon.
How to dose
Tablets go in a floating dispenser or an inline feeder, never on the pool floor where they will bleach and etch the surface. A 200g tablet typically treats 20,000 to 30,000 litres for several days. Target 1 to 3ppm free chlorine with pH held between 7.2 and 7.6.
Watch cyanuric acid build-up
Every tablet adds stabiliser that does not leave the water by itself. Once cyanuric acid passes roughly 100ppm the chlorine becomes progressively locked and the pool stops sanitising however much you add. Test for it monthly and dilute with fresh water when it climbs.
Storage
Strong oxidiser. Keep sealed, dry and cool, away from calcium hypochlorite, acids and all organic material. Never mix TCCA and cal hypo in the same feeder or dispenser.
