Bleach that leaves no residue
Hydrogen peroxide oxidises as powerfully as chlorine but decomposes into water and oxygen only. No chlorinated by-products, no salt loading, no smell. That is why it is preferred for textile bleaching, for treating industrial effluent before discharge, and for disinfection anywhere a chlorine residue would be a problem.
Applications
Cotton and fabric bleaching at 2 to 5% in an alkaline bath, pulp and paper brightening, industrial effluent and odour control, sterilising bottling and brewing equipment, algae control in cooling towers, and as the oxidiser in the WHO hand sanitiser formulation at 0.125%.
Dilution
50% peroxide is aggressive. Always dilute into water, never the reverse, and use dedicated plastic or stainless equipment. Avoid copper, brass, iron and any dirty vessel, metal ions and organic dirt catalyse rapid decomposition, which generates heat and oxygen and can rupture a closed container.
Storage, read carefully
Store upright in the original vented container, cool, dark and away from all organic material, metals and reducing agents. Never return unused peroxide to the original drum. A spill on cloth, paper or sawdust can self-ignite as it dries.
