Description
Solid chlorine, and why it wins on storage
Calcium hypochlorite carries 70% available chlorine in a dry granule that keeps its strength for a year or more if sealed and cool. Liquid hypochlorite starts losing strength the day it is made. For a pool operator, a water utility or an institution that buys quarterly rather than weekly, that stability decides the choice.
Pool dosing
Roughly 1.5g per 1000 litres raises free chlorine by about 1ppm. Dissolve the granules in a bucket of water first and pour the solution into the pool with the pump running, never broadcast dry granules onto a vinyl liner or a painted surface, because undissolved granules will bleach and damage it. Dose in the evening; ultraviolet light destroys free chlorine through the day.
Water treatment
Widely used for borehole and tank disinfection, pipeline shock chlorination and emergency water treatment. Target 0.2 to 0.5ppm free residual chlorine at the point of use.
Storage, important
This is a strong oxidiser. Keep it dry, sealed, cool and completely separate from acids, fuels, oils, solvents and organic material. Contact with a small amount of water or an organic contaminant inside a sealed drum can generate enough heat and gas to cause a fire. Never store it in the same room as diesel, petrol or paint.
