Description
Salt is how you thicken a detergent
Adding salt to an SLES-based system makes it thicker, up to a point. Every formulation has a salt curve with a viscosity peak, and the practical skill is finding that peak and stopping just short of it. Add salt as a pre-made brine, not as dry crystals, and add it in small measured increments while watching the batch, dry salt dropped into a drum creates local over-concentration that thins the product permanently in that spot.
Other uses
Regenerating the resin in a domestic or commercial water softener, brine for food processing, hide curing in tanneries, ice control in cold rooms, and as a cheap bulking agent in some powder blends.
Grade and packing
Supplied as free-flowing industrial grade sodium chloride in sealed 25kg and 50kg bags. This is not iodised table salt, iodine and the anti-caking agents added to food salt can discolour a detergent batch over time, so use industrial grade for any product that has to sit on a shelf.
Storage
Keep bags on a pallet off a concrete floor. Salt draws moisture up through concrete and the bottom of the bag will set solid.
