Description
The concentrate behind every bleach brand
Retail bleach in Kenya typically carries 3.5% available chlorine. This is the 12 to 14% industrial concentrate it is made from, so one part of this to about three parts of water gives you a finished retail-strength product. That is the whole business model of a small bleach repacker, and the reason a 200 litre drum turns into roughly 800 litres of saleable product.
Uses
Repacked household bleach, laundry whitening, hard surface disinfection, drinking water treatment at controlled dose, swimming pool chlorination, and sanitising food processing equipment after cleaning.
Strength fades, plan for it
Hypochlorite decomposes continuously. Heat, sunlight and time all accelerate it, and a drum left in the sun in Mombasa can lose a third of its strength in a month. Buy to your turnover rather than to your storage space, keep drums in shade, and if you are repacking, titrate each batch rather than assuming the delivered strength.
Critical safety point
Never mix hypochlorite with any acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid or an acidic toilet cleaner. The reaction releases chlorine gas immediately and it has killed people in domestic bathrooms. Store bleach and acid in separate parts of the store, and never on the same shelf.
