Three jobs in one material
In a detergent, sodium silicate buffers alkalinity, helps suspend soil and, critically for anything used in a washing machine or a metal parts washer, deposits a thin protective film that stops alkaline cleaners attacking aluminium and zinc components. In construction it is used as a concrete sealer and hardener. In packaging and foundry work it is a cheap, strong adhesive and binder.
In detergent powder
Typical inclusion is 5 to 15%. It contributes crispness to a spray-dried or agglomerated powder and prevents the mass going sticky. In liquid formulations keep the pH firmly alkaline; if a silicate solution is acidified it gels irreversibly and the batch is lost.
Handling
Thick, sticky and strongly alkaline. It sets to a hard glass film on any surface it dries on, so rinse tools and pumps immediately after use rather than at the end of the shift. Gloves and eye protection required.
